Summer school on Sanskrit theatre Kutiyattam in Kerala, India
21-30 August 2025

More infos here.

This summer school is designed for students of Sanskrit and Indian culture who wish to gain first-hand experience of classical Sanskrit theatre as it is still performed in Kerala in the local tradition of Kutiyattam. Participants will attend a 10-day festival of Kutiyattam theatre, featuring performances of the fourth act of Pratimānāṭaka (“The Play of Images”), attributed to Bhāsa, and an abridged version of Mahendravarman’s one-act Sanskrit comedy Mattavilāsa (“The Play of a Drunkard”). These will be presented by the music and theatre ensemble Nepathya. Daily performances will be complemented by reading sessions of the original Sanskrit plays, actor-led explanations of the acting techniques (abhinaya), as well as moments of discussion about the plays.

The number of places being limited, participants are advised to apply as soon as possible with a letter of motivation.
